Polyflowers

Wir ersticken in Plastikabfall. Rund 400 Millionen Tonnen Plastik werden jedes Jahr produziert. Und zu viel davon landet im Meer: Zwei Drittel des gesamten Meeresmülls besteht heute aus Kunststoffen. Plastik an Stränden, in Meeressedimenten, in Meeresstrudeln. Mikroplastik als tödliche Gefahr für Fische, Meeressäuger, Seevögel. Denn herkömmliche Kunststoffe wie etwa PET sind biologisch nicht abbaubar. Sie werden nur langsam zersetzt durch Salzwasser und Sonne und treiben als immer feinere Partikel auf ewig im Meer.

Im Gegensatz dazu sind Blütenpflanzen Teil des natürlichen Stoffkreislaufs. Sie wachsen, blühen auf, verwelken, werden irgendwann von Mikroorganismen biologisch zersetzt und dienen als Grundstoff für die Entstehung neuen Lebens. Und sie produzieren durch Photosynthese den lebensnotwendigen Sauerstoff auf unserer Erde.

Polyflowers ist ein fotografisches Projekt, das sich mit diesen Gegensätzen beschäftigt. Vor allem geht es um den Gegensatz zwischen dem natürlichen und dem synthetischen Farbspektrum: Blumen in Plastikflaschen, Natur in Polymeren. Durch Colorblocking werden Kunststoff und Natur in ihrer Farbgebung einander gegenübergestellt.

Polyflowers

We suffocate in plastic waste. About 400 million tons of plastic are produced every year. And too much of it ends up in the sea: two thirds of all marine waste today consists of plastics. Today we even have plastics on beaches, in marine sediments, in sea strudels. Microplastics are a deadly danger for fish, marine mammals and seabirds. Because conventional plastics such as PET are not biodegradable. They are only slowly decomposed by salt water and sun and float forever in the sea as ever finer particles.

In contrast, flowering plants are part of the natural material cycle. They grow, blossom, wither, are at some point biologically decomposed by microorganisms and serve as the basic material for the creation of new life. And through photosynthesis they produce the oxygen on our earth that is essential for life.

Polyflowers is a photographic project that deals with these contrasts. Above all it is about the contrast between the natural and the synthetic color spectrum: flowers in plastic bottles, nature in polymers. Through colorblocking, plastic and nature are juxtaposed in their colors.
